What the Valley of the Kings is
This desert valley holds the rock cut tombs of New Kingdom pharaohs, their walls covered in vivid painted scenes meant to guide the king into the afterlife. More than sixty tombs have been found here, including that of Tutankhamun.
How the tickets work
A standard ticket lets you into three tombs from those open that day. Star tombs such as Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramses VI need extra tickets, paid separately, so bring cash.
How to visit
It is best seen on a guided West Bank morning, often with Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. A good option is the private Valley of the Kings and Karnak tour.
